The San Antonio-New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), consisting of Bexar and all the surrounding counties, is home to some 2.4 million people.

The San Antonio Information Technology (IT) economy consists of three major sub-sectors: IT Companies; Organizational IT; and U.S. Federal & Military departments and agencies.

eco-gr3IT Companies include both large, established international enterprises and small, innovative startups. They produce both IT products (e.g., computer equipment/software) and IT services (e.g., website hosting). San Antonio’s IT Industry is primarily concentrated in computer and internet services.
IT workers at non-IT companies also comprise an important part of every city’s IT economy. We call this Organizational IT. San Antonio, home to 5 Fortune 100 companies and scores of other organizations of all sizes, has a rich Organizational IT sector that employs thousands of IT professionals.
The third sub-sector consists of U.S. Federal Government departments and agencies (including numerous Military commands and national security organizations). This sub-sector is especially important in San Antonio, home to the second-largest number of certified information systems security professionals in the nation.
